It's that time again. The Life Stories are up! So grab some coffee and take time to enjoy the circle. Don't know about the Life Stories Series? Well, I've joined with a group of photographers in a monthly project to photograph my own family just being who they are. Capturing those simple moments in a lifestyle way - no posing, just them. The best part is that we link our blogs in a big circle, so you can click from one to another and enjoy the amazing stories and the awesome photography of these ladies. So my boys love Beyblades. Every morning they wake up and "battle" each other. The call out special moves and change out face plates and performance tips. This is serious business! They know all the names and all the special moves and the characters who carry the different "Beys". They yell at each other when they don't win. They get annoyed at their sister when she ruins their battle. Serious - I tell ya! They crack me up. Crazy #2 will run around with a bey in his hand most of the day. You'll be talking to him when all of the sudden you have a twirling top coming right at you out of nowhere. Gotta watch out. They've even been know to launch them down the stairs. Mommys may not like that very much, but I have to admit, as a kid, that would've been pretty awesome. :D But don't tell my kiddos that.

Happy Valentines | League City Childrens Photographer

Okay so I have a confession. I really don't love Valentines photos. Actually, I usually really don't like them at all. They just feel too cheesy and frilly. I'm just not a cheesy, frilly kinda girl. Unless it's Easy Cheese on a cracker kinda frilly cheese. Yum! :) So I wasn't going to take Valentines photos of the kids this year, but then I kept seeing everyone with their cutesy little cards and photos, and the peer pressure got the best of me. LOL So I rummaged through the kids closets and through my props/decorations to see what I could come up with. Clothes don't match - that's okay, we'll go black and white. Hahaha... The boys were up first.

Hats always are a good motivator for this boy. I guess he needs a prop. I'll be honest, he's a little weird, but in a good way. Like he's walking through the world on his own program. He a bit wacky, so these shots pretty much sum him up. Sheesh... I love that little Crazy!

Up next, we have this handsome little man. He was all about the vest and the heart box especially the funny thing where you hold it up in front of your face so mom can't take a picture of your face. Yep hilarious (if you're 5). But I can't complain too much, he's usually pretty compliant and gives me the shot pretty quick. :)

Then in walks this.... Yelling at me. Yes, yelling at me about how she needs this and this. "Oh, and this!" She has dressed herself with one of the boys ties (on backwards none-the-less) and is insisting that she needs the heart and a crayon. So what do you do? You go with it! I mean really I couldn't have come up with something more perfect, but where she gets that sass from I have no idea. Holy moly what is she doing? Hahahaha. She keeps us on our toes.

So what did I do with these precious little pics? Well I'm glad you asked because I'm quite proud of my craftiness. :D I used them to make cute little treat bag toppers. I think they turned out really cute, and all my kids loved them. Hopefully, their friends will too.

Beginnings | Friendswood Newborn Photographer

This wonderful family is beginning a new journey as they add their sweet little boy to the world. I should say little. He was a big boy. I had to pull out the big props for him. He clearly has lots of people that already love him. The sweet little hat in the first shot was knitted by his uncle. :)

I love tootsie shots! Look at those little toes.

Mom and Dad were so great and so calm even when this precious little guy chose to do some not precious things all over dad's hands. Yep, it happens. People ask me all the time if baby's ever poo and yes, yes, they do. Poor dad got the worst of it this time though, but he was a trooper. And we got the shot. :) Thanks for being so awesome guys. Congratulations!

What's in My Bag? | Clear Lake Photographer

So I get asked a lot about what's in my bag, so I thought I'd post about my gear. What I use and why I love each piece.

Canon 5D Mark II
Yep, I'm a Canon shooter, but I'm not a Nikon hater. Each has it's pros and cons. It just so happens that I started out with Canon and that is what I have built my base of lens around. This is a full frame camera with high ISO capabilities. It is great for inside homes or at weddings when you have low light.

Canon 50D
My back-up camera. Yes, all professional photographers should have a back-up camera, and yes, you should take it to sessions. And yes, you should have it charged and ready to go. I hear a lot of folks say they don't need a back-up because they just shoot portrait sessions, not weddings. Well, I would hate for a mom who spent hours getting herself and her whole family ready for a session to show up and have me tell her to go back home and do it all over again another day. That's just not the way I think you should run a business.

Canon 50mm 1.4
This is the lens that sees pretty much like your eye views the scene. It gives the subject a nice 3D look. I often use it with children because I can get close and interact with them while I'm shooting. This is a good lens for low light situations, although for a session, I'm more than likely going to pull out lights to help if the light is that low. I would say it is my go-to lens for indoor shoots. It is a good focal length to capture the scene in tight spaces without the distortion of a short focal length.

Canon 16-35mm 2.8L
So I call this lens the fun lens. I use it for fun, silly portraits. Think family running together or a silly face on a kid. The distortion of this lens can really make for some fun compositions. This lens also picks up a lot of background; hence, I use it when there is a beautiful landscape or sky behind my subject that I want to capture. I'm a sky-lover. I will use this lens at every shoot. Indoor or outdoors - I love it!

Canon 100mm 2.8L macro
Love this lens! Obviously, I use it to catch details of children and newborns, but it is also a beautiful, beautiful portrait lens. I use this lens for most of my outdoor sessions. The compression of this lens is so flattering to adults. Of course, the compression also makes for beautiful bokeh. I use this lens in the studio a lot too. It is a great headshot lens too.

Canon 70-200mm 2.8L
I just added this lens to my arsenal. I needed a longer focal length for some shots, and I'm loving this lens for so many of the same reasons I love the 100mm lens. It is a great versatile lens.

Canon 430EX Speedlight
This is a basic speedlight. I might use this to bounce some light in a dark home or at a wedding. I also use it with an umbrella or softbox to shoot off-camera flash especially with seniors. It is highly portable, and I take it to every session. Always be prepared right.

Jackie - Class of 2012 | League City Senior Photographer

This gorgeous girl is graduating! Jackie was such a sweetheart to work with, and she had such great clothes. I love the bold stripes she choose. I love working with seniors. I love coming up with fun ideas for their session and watching them show off their personality right there in front of the camera. Seniors have such an amazing energy, and Jackie definitely has that. She just draws you in with that great smile. Just take a look!

Life Stories Series: The Story of Naptime? | Clear Lake Childrens Photographer

It's Life Stories time again. If you miss the previous ones, click here to go through them and find out how they work.

So here is the first sign that things are not going as planned. Those toys were inside that door. Yep, that one right there. You see - it's naptime. That's right, that wonderful time where children go off to rest, while Mommy gets all those things done that just can't happen while little ones are underfoot. This is a sacred time for Mommies, and they do not give it up easily. At least not this mommy, but I think I may have a serious fight on my hands with this little girl.

Gotcha! Is it just me or does she look kinda proud of herself?

Well some might say that's progress. The animals have returned to the bed, but there seems to be someone very important missing.

This was her headboard before she ripped it off the wall. No, she's not superhuman. It's just padded foam core held to the wall with 3M, but still!

Hmmm....

Evidently, she thought something good might be in that drawer.

Yep, "What's Wrong" is Right!

Wish me luck with future naptimes and the destruction that ensues. I'm thinking it isn't going to get any easier.

I always know it's going to be a good session when I see mom and dad come in and laugh together. Just the way they smile at each other is such a tell. It always spills over to the whole family. That's what I see in this family - Love. For each other, for their precious girls, for their family.

It's funny not so long ago, I loved only black and white. Now color rules my ways. I love the warmth of the colors, the warmth of the families I photograph, but every once in awhile I feel the need for some classic b&ws. Such a beautiful family. I love their connection.

The Story of ... Freckles and Every Other Detail | League City Childrens Photographer

So it's time for a new life stories series. If you've been following along, you know that each month a group of amazing photographers and I participate in a blog project to document the stories of our lives. At the end of each blog post is a link to another photographer. You can follow the circle all the way through and back to my blog. If you missed the last couple of months, here's a link to those.

Freckles :) - oh how I love them. I love the look of her precious little nose just dotted with those beautiful little details. One of those details that I never want to forget. I want to capture each bit of her and who she is. All those pieces that make her up from the sweet freckles - to the dark red lips - to the striking blue eyes to the curled toes. I love each and every piece. I love her beyond measure.

And yes, she is also a black eye. A run in with her brother's bike. :( But still a memory too because she is also a rough-n-tumble kinda girl. Details... :)

The S. Family | League City Family Photographer

I met up with this gorgeous family for a mini-session. It took us awhile to find a time that would work. They are one busy bunch with baseball and band for 3 busy boys. I think I see a glimpse into my future with 3 active kids.

I always get a bit worried with boys at this age because you never know if they are going to balk a taking family photos, but they were all great. No complaints from a one of them. :) I have a feeling these boys will do anything for their mama.

Life Stories Series: The Story of the Shopping | League City Childrens Photographer

Ever see a photographer who starts out with a 365 day project, or even a 52 week project and never finishes? Yeah, me too. Well, I recently joined a group of a few other busy photographers who decided to commit to a 12 month project! If we fail this, we'll be taking donations for a time management seminar. The best part is that it will be totally candid, lifestyle shots of each of our own families/lives. We don't even have to dredge up random people or make our kids pose for us. We're calling the series "The Story of ________" and we'll each be filling in our own blanks. At the end of this post is a link to another photographer who participated and she'll be linking to someone else. It's a whole big circle of stories in pictures. Click through and enjoy!

Our weekly shopping trip - I have to say I was a chicken doing this. I'd take my big ole huge camera out and take a quick shot and then put it back in my bag. Wait until I got to another empty aisle and shoot a few more, but I'm so glad I did it. What great memories! And we actually made it out of the store with all our shoes. Yep, that's a miracle.

I love working with newborns. They are always my longest and hardest session, but they are so worth it. It is amazing how fast they change, and I love being able to capture those sweet little wrinkles before they fade. Plus I just get to cuddle with sweet little babies too.

Two Are Better Than One | Clear Lake Family Photographer

I met up with these sweet little 2 year olds with their Mommy and Daddy. They were so sweet and well behaved and did I mention cute.

So I was editing this one, and I showed my husband. I said, "Isn't that the cutest?" He said, "Yep." and then he said, "You are such a sucker for the Daddy/Daughter pics." Ummm... yeah! They are almost always the first ones I edit. Just such a special bond. But really, look at her; she is the cutest.

And of course, Mamas and their boys make me happy too. He had her laughing the instant she picked him up, and that is what boys and mamas are like. They keep us on our toes, and they keep us smiling. (Most of the time.)

Who's five years old?!? This guy - that's who! I can't believe it. How does that happen so fast? My sweet Crazy #2 - he is my snuggly, smiley, silly, precious little boy. He cracks me up. He will laugh at anything. So much so, that sometimes he can't even move because he's got the giggles. I love that about him. I love that big smile and his deep voice that sounds like a baby James Earl Jones. I love that he likes to state the obvious much to the chagrin of his brother. I even kinda love that he knows exactly how to push his brother's buttons and does it frequently. Because that's just him, and I LOVE him beyond anything I could have imagined.

So happy birthday to my sweet boy.
